California Missions History
The California missions, founded by Spanish missionaries between 1769 and 1833 along El Camino Real, were central to Spain's efforts to colonize North America. These 21 mission outposts, spanning 650 miles from San Diego to Sonoma, aimed to convert Native Americans to Christianity and expand Spanish control. Blending Spanish and indigenous architectural styles, many of the missions later evolved into major cities such as San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
Artists have long depicted their beauty and complex colonial legacy in diverse styles, reflecting their cultural and historical significance and the layered narratives of California’s past.
